RockStarCV NarratorIntroduction

Welcome to Inside the Interview from Rock Star C V. This is a complete Business Analyst interview, followed by a practical debrief. The people, employer, program, figures, and outcomes are fictional US-based composites.

RockStarCV NarratorMeet Lena and the candidate

Lena Morales is a Director of Business Transformation. Jordan Lee is an experienced Business Analyst interviewing for a senior role. Listen for how Jordan discovers the need, traces decisions, tests business behavior, and measures value without claiming authority that belongs to other roles.

Lena MoralesThe room

Hi, Jordan. It is good to meet you. Did you have any trouble joining?

Jordan LeeThe room

Hi, Lena. No trouble at all. Thank you for having me.

Lena MoralesThe room

Great. We have about forty minutes. I will start with your background, then we will work through discovery, requirements, change, testing, and outcomes. I will leave time for your questions. Sound all right?

Jordan LeeThe room

Yes, that sounds good.

Lena MoralesCareer story

Tell me about your experience as a Business Analyst and what has prepared you for this senior role.

Jordan LeeCareer story

I have six years of experience improving healthcare operations and digital workflows. I started in provider services, documenting recurring call drivers and small process changes. That taught me to observe the work before assuming the ticket described the real problem.

Jordan LeeCareer story

I then moved into cross-functional delivery. My work now spans current-state analysis, facilitated discovery, process and data models, requirements, acceptance criteria, UAT, and post-release measurement. I usually work between operational teams, clinical subject-matter experts, engineering, privacy, compliance, and outside vendors.

Jordan LeeCareer story

A representative project was a prior-authorization intake redesign for a fictional regional health plan processing about twelve thousand requests a month. I did not own the product roadmap or the compliance interpretation. I owned the analysis: making the need, decisions, requirements, tests, and measurement model clear enough for those owners to act.

Lena MoralesCareer story

What changed because of your analysis?

Jordan LeeCareer story

Across the first ninety days, incomplete submissions fell from twenty-four percent to eleven percent, and first-pass routing accuracy rose from eighty-two percent to ninety-five percent. Those are fictional teaching figures here, but the way I would present real results is the same: denominator, baseline window, result window, and my specific contribution.

Lena MoralesWhy business analysis

Why this Senior Business Analyst role, and why now?

Jordan LeeWhy business analysis

The role sits where I do my best work: a regulated operation, a digital product, and several groups that use different language for the same problem. I am ready to lead the analysis approach across an initiative, not only produce requirements for one workstream.

Jordan LeeWhy business analysis

I also noticed that your description makes the BA accountable for measurement after release. That matters to me. A clean backlog is useful, but it is not evidence that the business problem improved.

Lena MoralesDiscovery

Give me an example of a stakeholder asking for a feature when the underlying need turned out to be different.

Jordan LeeDiscovery

Provider operations asked for a new mandatory upload field in the portal. The stated reason was that clinical reviewers were receiving incomplete requests. Before writing the requirement, I sampled two hundred returned cases and observed intake specialists working them.

Jordan LeeDiscovery

The field was not the main gap. The required document changed by service type, and the portal did not explain that at the point of entry. Intake staff also used a free-text note to repair routing errors, so the missing-document report combined two different problems.

Jordan LeeDiscovery

I mapped the current state with provider services, clinical review, and intake, then played it back with examples. We agreed the need was to guide the submitter to the right evidence and route a complete request, not simply force one file upload.

Lena MoralesDiscovery

How did you know the sample was not leading you to the wrong conclusion?

Jordan LeeDiscovery

I stratified it by service type, submission channel, and return reason, then asked the reporting analyst to reproduce the counts over the previous eight complete weeks. For any protected health information used in analysis, privacy confirmed the minimum fields and approved the access path. I did not make that determination myself.

Lena MoralesDiscovery

And what did you recommend?

Jordan LeeDiscovery

A rules-driven checklist by service type, clearer reason codes, and a structured routing value. We piloted the three highest-volume service types first. The requested upload field remained available where it was genuinely required, but it stopped being the solution for every case.

Lena MoralesRequirements and decisions

How do you resolve conflicting requirements when every stakeholder says theirs is critical?

Jordan LeeRequirements and decisions

First, I make sure we are not calling different things a requirement. I separate the business outcome, stakeholder need, solution behavior, quality constraint, and transition need. Then I trace each item to a source, affected users, risk, and success measure.

Jordan LeeRequirements and decisions

On that intake redesign, provider services wanted fewer required fields, clinical review wanted more structured evidence, engineering wanted a smaller first release, and privacy wanted data collection limited to the approved purpose. None of those positions was unreasonable.

Jordan LeeRequirements and decisions

I used three test cases and a decision table. For each option, we compared completeness, submitter effort, routing reliability, privacy impact, delivery effort, and whether it supported the agreed pilot outcome. That turned a debate about preferences into a choice with consequences.

Lena MoralesRequirements and decisions

Who made the choice?

Jordan LeeRequirements and decisions

The operational sponsor approved the pilot scope after privacy and compliance confirmed their constraints and product confirmed capacity. I facilitated, documented the recommendation, and maintained the trace. I did not present consensus as the decision mechanism.

Lena MoralesRequirements and decisions

What if a senior stakeholder keeps pushing after that decision?

Jordan LeeRequirements and decisions

I would restate the decision and the new evidence they are bringing. If the evidence changes the risk or value, I would run the impact path again. If it does not, I would ask the decision owner to confirm whether the baseline is changing rather than letting delivery absorb an informal exception.

Lena MoralesChange impact

Tell me about a significant requirement change after delivery was already under way.

Jordan LeeChange impact

Midway through build, our compliance team clarified that a future-state response needed to distinguish an approval, a denial with a specific reason, and a request for more information. The existing design treated the last two as a single exception state.

Jordan LeeChange impact

I traced the change from the business rule through the response model, portal copy, integration mapping, acceptance criteria, training examples, and reporting definitions. That exposed four stories, twelve test scenarios, and one vendor mapping that would be affected.

Jordan LeeChange impact

I presented two options: hold the pilot and complete all three states, or keep the date with only service types the current mapping could represent safely. The second option was cheaper in the short term but created a second provider change and more transition risk.

Lena MoralesChange impact

Did you decide it was a compliance requirement?

Jordan LeeChange impact

No. Compliance owned that interpretation. My role was to turn their approved interpretation into traceable operational, data, solution, and transition impacts, then make the delivery choice visible.

Lena MoralesChange impact

Which option did the team take?

Jordan LeeChange impact

The steering group moved the pilot by two weeks and completed the three response states. I updated the baseline, revalidated the affected examples, and added provider communication to the transition plan. There was no hidden work left under the old acceptance criteria.

Lena MoralesUAT and data

Describe a serious issue you found during user acceptance testing.

Jordan LeeUAT and data

In UAT, an urgent request with two service lines appeared complete in the portal but routed to the standard queue. The screen behaved as designed. The business behavior was wrong because the routing rule evaluated only the first service line.

Jordan LeeUAT and data

I linked the scenario to the accepted rule and reproduced it with synthetic test records. A SQL query from the data analyst showed that about seven percent of the prior eight weeks' multi-line urgent requests had the same pattern in the legacy feed. That established exposure; it did not make me the data owner.

Lena MoralesUAT and data

What did you do with that evidence?

Jordan LeeUAT and data

I documented the failed acceptance example, the affected population, the patient-service risk, and three options. My recommendation was to block production for the affected service types, correct the all-line evaluation, and rerun the urgent and mixed-line regression set.

Jordan LeeUAT and data

Privacy also reviewed the diagnostic extract before use. We retained only the fields needed to reproduce routing and used synthetic records for the working session. I recorded that approval instead of treating a good intention as a control.

Lena MoralesUAT and data

Were you the person who stopped the release?

Jordan LeeUAT and data

No. The operational sponsor was the release authority. I gave them a decision-ready recommendation with severity, exposure, options, and retest evidence. They delayed those service types; the rest of the pilot continued.

Lena MoralesSolution evaluation

How do you know whether a solution was successful after release?

Jordan LeeSolution evaluation

I define the measure before release: exact numerator, denominator, owner, source, baseline window, and review date. For this pilot, the baseline was eight complete weeks, and the first outcome review covered ninety days after staged release.

Jordan LeeSolution evaluation

We tracked incomplete submissions, median active intake minutes, first-pass routing accuracy, eligible portal share, and production severity. In the fictional example, those moved from twenty-four to eleven percent, fourteen to eight minutes, eighty-two to ninety-five percent, and thirty-eight to sixty-one percent, with zero Severity-One defects in thirty days.

Lena MoralesSolution evaluation

You also mentioned savings. Walk me through that.

Jordan LeeSolution evaluation

It was an illustrative annualized estimate, not a finance-approved benefit: twelve thousand requests a month, six active minutes avoided, twelve months, and a loaded labor assumption of about twenty-four cents per minute. That gives roughly two hundred ten thousand US dollars. I would label the assumptions, subtract implementation cost for a business case, and avoid claiming the workflow alone caused every observed change.

Lena MoralesCandidate questions

Thank you. What would you like to ask me?

Jordan LeeCandidate questions

Which decisions does the Senior Business Analyst own here, and which decisions sit with product, compliance, or an operational sponsor?

Lena MoralesCandidate questions

The BA owns the analysis approach and the quality of the decision evidence. Product owns priority, compliance owns interpretation, and the operational sponsor owns release acceptance. We expect the BA to surface ambiguity early.

Jordan LeeCandidate questions

That is helpful. Six months in, what evidence would tell you the person in this role is improving both requirement quality and business outcomes?

Lena MoralesClosing the interview

We would look for fewer late requirement reversals, clearer acceptance evidence, and two initiatives with measures that operations actually uses. We are finishing interviews next week and will follow up after that.

Jordan LeeClosing the interview

Thank you, Lena. I appreciate the clarity and the conversation. Have a good afternoon.

RockStarCV NarratorOutro 1 · Verdict

Jordan's answers were strong because the analysis stayed connected to a decision.

RockStarCV NarratorOutro 2 · Evidence

The candidate did not hide behind artifacts or borrow authority from product, compliance, privacy, data, or the release sponsor.

RockStarCV NarratorOutro 2 · Evidence

Four signals stayed visible. Jordan separated the need from the requested feature, traced decisions into tests, named the accountable owner, and defined value with a denominator and time window.

RockStarCV NarratorOutro 2 · Evidence

Use a five-link chain in your own answers: the need, the evidence, the requirement, the decision, and the measure after release.

RockStarCV NarratorOutro 3 · Framework

Strong Business Analysts influence important choices, but they do not need to claim every choice.

RockStarCV NarratorOutro 3 · Framework

State what you analyzed and recommended, then name who interpreted policy, approved priority, or accepted release risk.

RockStarCV NarratorOutro 4 · Practice

Choose one real change you supported. Write five short lines for the need, evidence, requirement, decision, and measured change. Then practise explaining the links naturally.
